This week marks the start of Women’s History Month, an annual observance to commemorate and highlight the vital role of women in American history and contemporary society.

At CUNY SPS, our Committee for Institutional Equity and Diversity (CIED) has curated a number of suggestions on how to honor the month. Here’s what I’ve decided to do to celebrate, based on their great list:

Watch

PBS has made number of documentaries available on their website that explore many women who have made history. I’m interested particularly in watching ones about activist Grace Lee Boggs, the opera singer Marian Anderson, and an inspiring girl’s high school debate team in Massachusetts.

Walk

During the month, I’m going to check out a few city parks and public monuments named after important women in New York City’s history, starting with several spaces near the CUNY SPS campus in midtown!

Learn

As an educator myself, I’m always looking for great educational websites to explore. This month, I’m going to spend some time digging into the New-York Historical Society’s Women & the American Story curriculum website.

Listen

Even with my busy schedule, I try to make time to enjoy some of NYC”s finest performers. This March, I plan to attend at least one of the concerts offered as part of the Women’s Jazz Festival, organized by New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center.

Discuss

Finally, closest to home — I am so excited for the inaugural CUNY Women’s Conference Week, to be held from March 6 to March 10, 2023.

During that week, the University will host both the CUNY Student Women’s Leadership Conference and the CUNY Career Compass for Women Leaders Conference. I plan to attend a few of these talks and sessions, which will feature some of my colleagues.
